The fat-burning properties of caffeine were demonstrated in this study carried out at Maastricht University, which investigated the question of body weight loss and weight maintenance following consumption of caffeine and green tea supplements.

The experiment was carried out on 76 obese subjects and lasted 4 months.

Results showed that green tea consumption reduced body weight, waist circumference, respiratory quotient and body fat.

It also increased resting energy expenditure. This effect was not recorded in people consuming large amounts of caffeine.
