Victoza, an effective medication for type 2 diabetes
Victoza is a type 2 diabetes medication with an excellent reputation among prescribed products.
It is manufactured by the Danish laboratory Novo Nordisk, a world leader in diabetes products.
Victoza heralds the advent of a new generation of injectable medicines used in combination with insulin or other oral anti-diabetic agents when the impact of these treatments is insufficient or limited.
In other words, thanks to the addition of Victoza, conventional treatments for type 2 diabetes are much more effective.
How recognize type 2 diabetes
Also known as fatty diabetes, this type of diabetes is fairly common in adults. It often occurs in people who are obese, or appears with age; in contrast to type 1 diabetes, classified as an autoimmune disease which generally occurs during childhood.
Type 2 diabetes is characterized by resistance to the effect of insulin in regulating blood sugar levels, which become abnormally high, leading to chronic hyperglycemia.
Over time, this situation can lead to even more serious complications, particularly affecting the blood vessels, heart and kidneys, as well as the sensitivity of the body’s lower limbs…
There is a genetic predisposition to developing this type of diabetes, but it is mainly environmental factors and everyday lifestyle that cause it to appear in some people, not in others.
The most important factors causing this type of diabetes are obesity, overweight and the accumulation of fat in the abdomen, which develops a natural resistance to insulin.
How doesinsulin?
Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas. Its role is to transport sugar to the cells for use as fuel, enabling production of the energy the body needs for normal functioning.
The cells targeted by glucose are mainly located in the liver and muscles: we now have a better understanding of insulin’s vital role in cellular metabolism and energy production.
Insulin and type 2 diabetes
In people who are prone to type 2 diabetes because they are overweight, we observe 2 phenomena:
- Insulin resistance, meaning that liver and muscle cells become insensitive to the effect of insulin, prompting the pancreas to produce proportionately more insulin to overcome the effect of this resistance.
- Over time, the pancreas becomes exhausted, reaching its limits and unable to produce more and more insulin. This is when problems arise, due to the presence of large quantities of sugar in the blood, which instead of entering the cells, remains trapped in the blood. This is how a person develops type 2 diabetes.
Dozens of treatments for type 2 diabetes exist, and are effective provided they are prescribed by a doctor as part of a regular follow-up program, and are accompanied by a scrupulously healthy lifestyle.
Among these treatments is Victoza.
How works Victoza work?
The active ingredient in Victoza is Liraglutide, a substance we have already mentioned in an an article we’ve already published about a similar drug: Saxenda.
Basically, it’s the same molecule present in both products. They were manufactured by the same laboratory, but at different dosages.
And it’s precisely for this reason that their indications are different.
Action of Liraglutide
Liraglutide is an analogue of an intestinal hormone called Incretin. This hormone is gluco-dependent, i.e. it is secreted when glucose is absorbed by the body.
In type 2 diabetes, where insulin secretion is insufficient, Victoza provides additional insulin secretion, enabling glucose to reach target cells instead of lingering in the bloodstream.
Benefits of Victoza
Victoza acts like Incretin hormones, and its action lasts 24 hours, unlike natural Incretin, which is broken down after just a few minutes.
Victoza has no hypoglycemic effect like most anti-diabetics, since its action is triggered only by the presence of glucose in the blood.
Overweight diabetic patients using Victoza have experienced a gentle, steady weight loss, which has led to an improvement in their general state of health.
Some disadvantages of Victoza
Victoza has to be administered by subcutaneous injection at the same time every day, which can be painful for some people who hate injections, and a clavaria for forgetful people who forget when to take their medication.
The price of Victoza is quite high, and this is partly justified, as is the case with most new drugs on the market.
Victoza be be used as a slimming pill?
Our answer is NO!
Despite Victoza’s proven results in weight loss, we do not recommend its use in this indication, for a very simple reason:
A product similar to Victoza is already on the market, but with the right dosage for weight-loss purposes. If you insist on using Victoza for weight loss, we recommend that you consult your doctor, who will undoubtedly be able to advise you on the use of this type of medication.
The use of Victoza for weight loss is NOT RECOMMENDED, not because of a lack of efficacy, nor because of side-effect problems – not at all, since we know that this product is subject to compulsory medical prescription – but rather to stick to the initial indication of this product and not divert it from its intended purpose. Every laboratory manufacturer offers dosages adapted to each specific indication in order to remedy a specific disease.
NEVER ATTEMPT TO DIVERT A MEDICINAL PRODUCT FROM ITS INITIAL INDICATION!
