Konjac and blood lipid levels:
Several clinical trials have studied the impact of glucomannan on plasma lipids, body weight, fasting blood glucose and blood pressure. Their results were contradictory. For this reason, a meta-analysis of 13 trials, totalling 531 subjects, attempted to determine this effect more precisely.
This meta-analysis showed that konjac appears to have a beneficial effect on cholesterol (in general), LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol or low-density lipoproteins), triglycerides, body weight and fasting blood glucose, but not HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol or high-density lipoproteins) and blood pressure.
Konjac and diabetes:
Several clinical trials have demonstrated the action, albeit moderate, of glucomannan fibers on glycemia, particularly in people suffering from diabetes or obesity.
One such study, carried out in 2007, attempted to assess the benefits of glucomannan supplementation on type 2 glycemic and lipid control in diabetics.
The trial was conducted in a simple, placebo-controlled, blinded crossover design. The experiment involved administering two treatments separated by a 2-week washout period to 20 volunteers (10 men and 10 women) with type 2 diabetes.
The aim was to evaluate the effects of glucomannan/placebo on glucose absorption and insulin secretion (oral glucose tolerance test).
At the end of the experiment, the researchers concluded that in type 2 diabetes, preprandial ingestion of glucomannan attenuated the rise in blood glucose levels without significantly affecting insulin levels.
Long-term glucomannan supplementation may be beneficial for glycemic and lipid control in type 2 diabetes.

Konjac and weight loss:
Results on this subject are more mixed.
Let’s start with this systematic review of randomized controlled trials which attempted to determine the effect of glucomannan on body weight in overweight or obese children and adults.
The aim of this review was to systematically assess the effects of glucomannan on body weight and body mass index in otherwise healthy overweight and obese children and adults.
In conclusion, this group of researchers demonstrated that there is evidence that in the short term, glucomannan can help reduce body weight, but not BMI. The data observed in children in this review are very limited to draw any conclusions.

A previous trial in 2010 had already produced encouraging results.
This trial focused on a polysaccharide complex composed mainly of glucomannan fibers, PolyGlycopleX (PGX).
Participants consumed 5g of this complex, taken with 500ml of water, 5 to 10 minutes before each of the day’s main meals, for 14 weeks.
Results showed a significant reduction in body weight (average 5.79kg), waist circumference (average – 12.7cm), and body fat percentage (average – 2.43%).
Two drawbacks to this study: the protocol did not include a control group, and the complex is not composed exclusively of glucomannan fibers.
Side effects and contraindications of capsules
When taking glucomannan fibers, it is important to drink plenty of water to avoid any obstruction of the digestive tract.
Cases of esophageal obstruction have been reported following consumption of konjac in uncoated tablet form. Fortunately, this type of packaging is currently banned in Europe.
Capsules, on the other hand, have so far caused no such side effects, as they only disintegrate in the stomach.
Other potential side effects of glucomannan include diarrhoea, flatulence and loose stools.
